Borough Hall Greenmarket – Early April
I visited the Borough Hall greenmarket this past Thursday morning — the first Thursday market day for the season. And what did I find? Spinach!
Alongside their tables of potted flowers, Phillips Farms has the delicious wintered-over spinach, that I wrote about a couple of years ago, along with Kale and leeks. This spinach has a sweeter, heartier flavor than the summer crop will have.
The first greenmarket vegetables of the season!
No new spring crops yet at Wilklow Orchards — though they have delicious apples, applesauce, jams, cider, and cider donuts. From the apple bins Albert Wilkow recommended the Winesaps, which were juicy and firm. He told me that in the woods behind their orchards the ramps have just
started to poke up out of the ground. We should see them at the market in a few weeks.
In other news, Wilklow now has a Facebook page, where Al’s sister posts updates about what’s happening at the farm. Check it out!

You mentioned that you used to live in Cobble Hill/Carrol Gardens and went to the greenmarket at Borough Hall. How is that one? I now live in Williamsburg and go to McCarren Park Greenmarket but moving soon to downtown Brooklyn where is kind of close to the Borough Hall market. I tried the Ft. Greene Park one and thought it was a bit cramped compared to McCarren Park. Any recommendation on particular farmer down there?

Keiko – I’m a big fan of the Borough Hall market. It’s a big market so there’s always plenty to choose from, and its location in Cadman Plaza is very roomy. Many of the vendors are great, but I particularly like Wilklow Orchards and Phillips Farms. Check out my writeup of a visit I made to Wilklow Orchards a couple of years ago.
